The following contains brief information on other types of anxiety disorders
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Post-traumatic Stress disorder, aka PTSD, is brought on as a result of an individual experiencing a traumatic event. Causes of PTSD can include road accidents, assault, abuse, witnessing violence and terrorist attacks. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, further mental health problems and drug & alcohol misuse. Regarding business students, PTSD could affect them as they may find it difficult to relax in the environment they are working within.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, aka OCD, is quite a common mental health problem and is associated with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Although unclear, suggested causes of OCD include genetics, life experiences and personality traits. Symptoms of OCD include unwanted, distressing thoughts that won’t go away, feelings of anxiety and repetitive compulsive behaviours. OCD may effect business students as they could spend too much time organising their work instead of actually making progress.
Panic disorder consists of having panic attacks on a regular basis, sometimes for no reason. Causes are not fully known, however it could be due to genetics, brain chemistry and traumatic life experiences. Symptoms, other than panic attacks, of this condition include heart palpitations, trembling, fainting, stomach trouble and a fear of dying. Panic disorder could affect business students as they may skip classes due to fear of having a panic attack during a lesson.
As well as SAD and GAD, the above anxiety disorders can also have very serious implications on students such as yourself. If you identify with any of the above, please find out more information before contacting your GP.
